Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are many famous African American writers that are well known in today's society. Many are considered to be legends, as well as good role models for the youth of today. There are so many of these writers that are acknowledged in our history books, and there are even a few that have holidays set aside for them. Holidays for the nation to think about their contribution to our world. Although many of the African American writers are no longer alive, their outstanding achievements are still recognized, and taught to many boys and girls in schools all over the nation. Many of these writers wrote stories that at some extent represented a part of their lives. Even though one writer may have written hundreds of pieces of literature, something about their life or something about them is evident in their work. Keeping this in mind, this aspect has shaped their particular style of writing. One particular black successful writer is Ralph Ellison.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on March 1, 1914, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was the second son of Lewis and Ida Ellison. His older brother had died while still an infant. Three years after Ralph was born, his parents had another son name

about being a pilot. He also sets aside a portion of the story to reflect on when the pilot was growing up, and when he first saw an airplane. When the character's plane crashes into an open field, he is rescued by an old black man and a little boy. The old man says some things that have the pilot on edge, and he just wishes that the old man would go away. The character in this story hurt his ankle when the plane crashed, so the little bot went to go get a doctor. When the doctor comes, he brings two more people with him from the hospital, and they put the pilot in a straightjacket, which is definitely not needed. This act makes the pilot feel isolated from the world. The only reason the pilot is put into the straightjacket is because the doctor thinks he belongs in a straightjacket rather than an airplane. This is only because the pilot is black, and the doctor is white. This story is an example of how pilots thought of themselves during the war, and what the citizens thought of black pilots during the war, especially the white citizens.

though they are sitting pretty close to the back of the train, because the boy talks about the butcher and how he keeps coming back to grab more candy and fruit and magazines. The boy encounters he butcher trying to touch his mothers breast, and he wonders why a Negro woman could not travel with her children and not be molested. This story goes back to Ellison as well as his other short stories. Ellison and his younger brother Herbert were raised by their mother, because his father was killed. One more of Ellison's short stories is called "A Party down at the Square." This is the story of a black man being punished for something that is not stated in the story. This man's punishment is death. The cause of his death is by him burning to death. The community decides to make this a party that happens at night, and the whole neighborhood is invited to witness this. As a reader, we know that Ellison was never burned to death, but this could be something that he witnessed as a kid or even an adult. The narrator is also a character in the story, and he is frightened at the thought of seeing someone burned to death. This story is told in great detail also, and the reader is able to believe that this event actually took place.

the character is made known to the reader, and the description is not extraordinary, or beyond the readers belief. It is as though Ellison makes sure that his readers are able to identify with the feelings of his character, and understand his or her thoughts as well as any predicament he or she may be faced with. The character in this short story had many problems, and the main problem he faced was being black, which was something he could not help. He was trying to win money to help a friend or maybe a daughter. He actually ends up winning, but in the end his reward is not money, it is the gift that every black man before him had received, which was a beating, or maybe even death.

that won him an Oklahoma State Scholarship to attend the prestigious black college in Alabama, known as the Tuskegee Institute. While at the Tuskegee Institute, Ellison had to find a job, to earn extra money. He decided to get a part time job at the school library. He later cam
