1991 Ronald Reagan Presidential Library opened in Simi Valley, Ca.

During President Reagan’s first term in office arms control negotiations were largely put aside in favor of the military buildup. In November of 1981 President Reagan proposed the so called Zero Option, which was a scheme to eliminate nearly all intermediate range nuclear forces both on the NATO and Warsaw Pact sides from Europe. Zero Option appeared to be a public relations ploy to defuse the growing peace demonstrations in Europe because the Reagan administration knew that the Soviets possessed the most intermediate range missiles and thus would have to destroy the most therefore, they would reject it. Smart politics I say.

The Reagan Library. February 3, 2003

During this time he was in demand as a public speaker. He was seen as a potential savior of the California Republican party, which had been torn apart by factional infighting. In 1962 he formally switched parties and campaigned for former vice-president Richard Nixon, the unsuccessful Republican gubernatorial candidate in California.
