Basic Concepts of Puritan Ideology

We can generally explain puritans as a group of people who left their own land, (England) because of their King. King James refuses the church because he wants to devorce from his wife and marry with an other. And Catolic Church refuses this. Then King James said that he won’t be obeying the church rulez any more, and introduces himself as the new church of England. Puritans are religious people so that they couldn’t stand beside this situation and they decided to move elsewhere from England.

First Puritans who were decided to live the island were totally 102 people. They’ve filled a ship with any equipment, food, etc… which is called “Mayflower” They get all the thing with them, which should help them to build up their own lifes. They were going to a place which they’ve never seen before. A place even nobody has seen before. There were no economy, no towns, no social life even no people. This was a great risk. Any of those 102 people know what would they see when the Mayflower brings them to new lands. They only know that they’ll have to be working hard to set-up a new village and to stay alive.

Those 102 people successfully passed the huge atlantic ocean with Mayflower in 1620. The ship was somewhere near Bos


Puritans gave importance to direct teaching of Bible. People should read Bible himself. They refused to read the Book of Common Prayer. In churches which was the Anglican book and told that the king was the head of English Church what the Puritans retained from Catholicism was “1baptism” and “communion”.

In America Puritanism economy, politics and religion should be in harmony. Puritans were originally from the middle class. By this time, in the previous century middle class gains importance they were getting rich. This new increasing class now also wanted political power. There was a demand for more social life and economic matters “Democracy and Capitalism”. These two concepts came to America through Puritans. The habit of electing is the base for democracy community should control its affairs. As Puritanism develops we see particular tendency growing in the spirit. People of New England spirit is a mixture of Puritans coming from all the world.

In that times in America there was no literature except history. Puritan church was called “Meeting House”. Because people usually went there and saw each other there. Puritans had criticized people for being intolerance but when they established in new places in America they became intolerant to other people. They had Puritans, rich people in ruling class, not an aristocracy but became oligarchy (theocrachy). They were intolerant because they were eager to establish their commonwealth. They thought themselves always be the right. They think that they are similar to the Hebrews. Ibrani tribe which is a story in the Bible. They were tortured by Egyptians, they were the slaves of them. Their country was controlled by the Pharaoh. They left their country in order to live freely under the rule of Moses. They crossed the sea like Puritans crossing the ocean. They arrived a new place, climbed a mountain which is called Mount Pisgah. This is like Puritans comig to promise land “America”. Puritans had always seen a parallel between this story and their travel. They both passed a sea and faced difficulties.

Before this, they negotiated with one of the companies. They wanted to establish a company in Virginia because it had a wild climate. They establish an agriculture plantation in Vriginia. So they gathered in the ship May Flower and left the P
