Totalitarianism, is a centralized dictatorial form of government requiring complete subservience to the state, a person advocating such a system. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Big Brother was the " Friend of the People" , the Inner Party Leader. His face was projected all day long through numerous forms of media."On each landing opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall." His slogan "Big Brother is Watching You" was posted everywhere. The citizens of Oceania were not allowed to think, if they did so it was called Double Think. Double Think

Adolph Hitler used procedures that were very similar to the ones described in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Totalitarian methods can vary depending on the leader, but in a state ruled by that government there will always be total control over the individual.

Both novels also had methods to keep the brain from having any thoughts, but Huxley and Orwell described them in two different operations. Brave New World had Soma to keep people under control. If citizens had any problems they took Soma and their thoughts would soon become a holiday trip. "If ever, by some unlucky chance,anything unpleasant should somehow happen, why there’s always soma to give you a holiday from the facts. There’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering" In Big Brother’s society they didn’t need soma because they had different kinds of secret police to control everything. "The ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war. The Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order. And the Ministry of Plenty, which was responsible for economic affairs."

The slogan "War is Peace" was displayed everywhere. People were so exposed to it that they saw nothing wrong with the meaning of the slogan. Again in a totalitarian state there is no freedom of thought or expression.

Even though Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four are both novels that warn us of a fascist society; we can still see their differences. Orwell and Huxley have some similar thoughts, but many of them were applied in different ways to a totalirian state.

Orwell’s point of view might seem a bit exaggerated at this time, but I can easily see it happening later in the future if nothing is changed.
