Last Emperor
The Last Emperor is by self-definition a rap artist with a message. He is a virtuoso lyricists who prides him self on painting a picture for the listener with his words, while at the same time achieving the difficult task of rhyming. Growing up in West Philadelphia, and attending the same school as rapper, Fresh Prince The Last Emperor was exposed to Hip-Hop at an early age, and by high school he was beginning to develop his own style. He was not a popular student socially, so he consumed his time with fiction, and comic books. It was from this that he began to incorporate the two into a hip-hop song called “Secret Wars Part 1.” This song is a question posed to his audience of what would happen if the world’s greatest comic book heroes battled the Last Emperors favorite hip-hop artist? The song takes the audience through many different battles, between various different types of super hero’s battling hip-hop artist, each battle won by the rapper, who used their virtuoso style to defeat their opponent. He has a specific audience that he chose based on two major factors. First he poses the question to his audience that, “What if I had the, power to gather, all of my favorite emcees with the illest comic book characters,
Last Emperor leaves the door open at the end of his song for new artists to follow in his footsteps and the footsteps of those who paved the way for him, in his lyric “For all up and coming emcees, I\'ve got a question, If I made a Secret Wars Part Two, would your name even be mentioned? Would you make the final cut? I’d make even the nicest give their titles up.” By challenging his audience he is calling for response for the first time in the song. He has no repetitive chorus in the entire piece, which makes this almost a speech. At the end of his speech he as the speaker calls out to his audience of young emcees, and his rhetorical intentions are to challenge the new generation of hip-hop artists to be better rappers, and to stay true to hip-hop like he has. He doesn’t want them to be influenced by the big dollars that major record labels offer them. He implores them to continue to develop their styles and continue to up hold hip-hop. Or else they won’t make his next lyrical all-star team. The second major factor that narrows his audience for this song is the comic book characters themselves. When Last Emperor was growing up he was heavy into comic books because they represented an underground culture, which directly connects to his image as an underground artist. He relates to their image, he tries to relay that image to his audience. He is reaching out to members of his audience who like him followed comic book series, and knew the names of all the characters, and their special powers. Anyone who heard this song and was unaware of who Charles Xavier was would then be lost. By using these two major factors to narrow his audience he has achieved his goal of speaking to an educated audience that understands both true artists that have a political and social message that is more than just gin and juice. While The Last Emperor does have a message within his adventure, he created the song as just that, an adventure. He uses his virtuoso to play on words and his ability to speak to his audience and convey a story so well liked and coherent that it is almost like reading it from the pages of a novel. The catch for him is that he rhymes the entire way through from the first ver
