Victor’s heartless abandonment of the creature was catastrophic. When Frankenstein first created the monster he thought it would be glorious, but when reality set in he noticed that the experiment might have crossed the line. His feelings toward the creature at “birth” were clear; “now that I finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart”

(42) Victor then flees only to return when the creature vanishes. This is the beginning of the change the monster makes from innocent creature to vicious monster.

In the end, Victor’s life was destroyed by the one he created. Victor’s abandonment of the creature caused it to feel lonely and isolated. His mistreatment and disgust with his monster sent it into a series of murders and destruction of people Victor loved. As a result, Victor was just as much a villain as the monster he created.

The creatures revenge was targeted at Victor, but ultimately was suffered by all those whom Victor loved most. “From this moment I declared everlasting war against him who had formed me and sent me forth into this insupportable misery,” (121). Perhaps by hurting everyone close to Victor it would cause him pain that would last forever, unlike the pain that would be caused by hurting or killing him.
