Raymond Poe Vs. Don Craven
The race for State Representative of the 99th district appealed to me because of the way both men chose to run their campaigns. Republican, Raymond Poe and Democrat, Don Craven both ran honest campaigns, and were the only two candidates who did not run any negative advertisements. “It’s a battle between two nice men. Don Craven is a very good friend of mine and it should be a clean campaign. They are both gentlemen, both very nice people, and they’ll both work hard (Farmer 5).” The two candidates are both respectable men and regardless of the results, both ran a campaign to be proud of. Raymond Poe and Don Craven both have very strong opinions on issues regarding school budgeting. According to the June 5th issue of Illinois Times online the number one goal of Don Craven was to see that there is meaningful change to school funding. He wants to see that funding in the state of Illinois will be the same throughout schools in the suburbs, as well as Southern Illinois (Farmer 1). Raymond Poe agrees with Don Craven, but adds that schools should receive budgeting details in May impending the next school year. This means that schools will be able to know exactly what they will receive in order to plan ahead for the next
Raymond Poe won the race for the 99th District. Poe received 22,962 votes, whereas Don Craven only received 15,473. Craven was defeated by 7,489 votes. Poe will represent the 99th District this term. As of now, Craven has not yet announced plans to run again in the future (Election 3). Raymond Poe had many wonderful comments about Craven and noted him as a more than worthwhile opponent. He remains in the same office he has held since 1995 as the Illinois Representative for the 99th District. Although his district has undergone several changes recently, he has nothing but high hopes for great opportunity for the region. Among his many accomplishments are having been rated Tenth Most Effective Legislature in Illinois Politics, 1996 Friend of Agriculture Award from the Illinois Farm Bureau, 1995 Best New Legislature from the Illinois Times, 100% Rating, Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Special Mission Recognition from the Sherman United Methodist Church, and Special Recognition in 1991. Other Appointments of Raymond Poe include taking part as a speaker on the Daniel’s Education Taskforce and 1995-1996 Sangamon County Sheriff’s DUI Task Force (Raymond 1-2). Several debates between the two candidates took place. Several newspapers, including the State Journal Register and The Illinois Times, covered these debates. Local News Channels and Radio gave brief details on the issues covered in these debates. One radio debate on WFMB-AM discussed the member initiative program. Although several radio commercials were aired for both candidates, neither one took part in the use of slander. This was the only race in Illinois in which neither candidate used negative advertisement. Despite the fact that I am a Democrat, when I voted this fall, I voted for Raymond Poe. I respect all he has accomplished in the past seven years and I agree with many of the principals that he supports. I have every reason to believe that he will continue to help Springfield grow economically as well as agriculturally. I also respect the way in which he ran his campaign and all of his previous campaigns. He never takes a shot at his opponent’s character; he only attacks the issues. For that I respect him not only politically, but also as a man. It’s refreshing and rare to have a politician I feel as though I can trust. In the end I believe the better man for this pos
