Roy Halston: A Review
Roy Halston Frowick was born April 23, 1932 in the mid-west, and began a love for design at an early age. Far from the instant success he would later achieve in the 70s, Halston began as a milliner. He had initial success at designing hats, becoming the star at Bergdorf Goodman's. This, and his easy ability to make correct connections, eventually led to a career in fashion design. Although the name Halston became infamous in fashion, there was initial struggle for success in his fashion line. That infamy was only associated with his hats designed for Bergdorfs, and especially for the pillbox donned by Jackie O. at JFK's inauguration. This was when Halston was truly in complete control of his design team and the direction of his business. Within this decade, Halston catered to his elite clientele with his vision of modern clothing, which trickled down to all women. Halston was also involved in other advancements being made in the fashion industry at that time. One of these was the trend towards more vertical integration; Halston acquired lines and companies, and Halton divisions were acquired, and soon Halston, Ltd. Became Halston Enterprises Inc, a major corporation. Halston also realized the opportunity in the very lucrative business of licensing his name. Before, only seen in fashion perhaps by Pierre Cardin and Christion Dior, Halston’s licensiong was due to the notoriety of the Halston logo and a five-year licen
