Rainman
In the movie "Rainman", Dustin Hoffman played the part of Raymond Bobbitt, a young man with autism. Tom Cruise played the part of Charlie Bobbitt, Raymond's younger brother. Raymond was institutionalized At Walbrook when Charlie was only two years old. His name was never mentioned while Charlie was growing up and he never knew he had a brother. At the age of sixteen, Charlie had asked to use his father's '49 Buick convertible and was refused. Therefore, Charlie took the convertible without permission. Finding the car gone, Charlie's father reported the car stolen. Charlie was apprehended and his father let him sit in jail for two days before paying his bail. When Charlie was released, he left home and didn't look back. On his way back to Palm Springs with his girlfriend, Charlie learns of his father's death in Cincinnati, Ohio. Even though he had not had much communication with his father for a number of years, Charlie immediately headed for Ohio to attend the funeral. Charlie believed that he was an only child. Because of this belied, he thought he would inherits his father's estate worth over three million dollars. This would ease the financial difficulties he was experiencing in his business. However, in his will, his fathe
When they reached California, Charlie tried to get legal custody of Raymond. By this time, the money was no longer the issue. Charlie wanted custody of Raymond because they were brothers and he wanted them to be together. Another characteristic of autism is self stimulation which is repetitive behavior that provides sensory stimulation. Raymond would sit in a chair or on a bed, He would repeatedly rock back and forth while talking to himself. An inability to be flexible with daily schedules is another characteristic of autism. Raymond was unable to tolerate any interruptions to his schedule. He would repeatedly tell how many minutes until his tv show, his bedtime, what he should eat for each meal each day of the week, where his bed should be located in a room, and what clothes he should wear each day. He knew Charlie's clothes were not his. He would not wear anything that belonged tv Charlie because his clothes had his name on them. When Charlie suggested buying something new, Raymond always answered,"K-Mart on Oak Street," which was located in Cincinnati. I have never seen this movie before. However, it was an excellent film. I felt sorry for Raymond in many instances. I felt sorry for him when he was taken from familiar surroundings and put into new environments or situations. He had lived most of his life in an institution with much structure to his daily life. He knew and understood what was expected . I felt sorry for him when Iris broke their date because he didn't understand what was going on.
