While most people in attendance focused on the dancers on stage, my main focus was on the music coming out of the speakers. I’ve heard the music from the Nutcracker Suite before while watching the ballet but had never given much thought to the music that the dance is derived from. I recognized the music for “Chinese Dance” because I have that ring on my cell phone. I had not previously known that it was from the Nutcracker Suite. It was a very short but extremely energetic piece of music that had many high trills from either the flute of piccolo, violins were also used but the strings were plucked instead of bowed. It sounds annoying on my phone but I enjoyed hearing it played by an orchestra.

My favorite piece was the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”. The main instrument used was the celeste. The celeste played high staccato notes and had a very light and added a light and airy feel to the music. The steps of the Sugar Plum Fairy were also very small and quick to match the celeste’s sound. The oboe and violins were also part of this piece. For the most part the music was played softly but there were times when the violin would play a note loudly and then disappear, however it does end in forte. At one point the music ended and the audience began its applause but then t
