Organizational Development
Nike is a well-established supplier of sports clothing and equipment (www.nike.com). Nike has successfully opened franchised chains of department stores all over the world. Athens is the host of three of these department stores (www.nike.gr), one being located in Glyfada. The Nike stores provide the public with top quality apparel and equipment at “value for money” prices. The store in Glyfada opened in 1998 and employees the following staff: management, cashier, accountant, and sales staff, marketing staff and cleaning staff. Management is responsible for day-to-day operation of the store and human resources. The following sections analyze several aspects of the Nike department store. Human Resources Management, Total Quality Management and Reward Systems. Human resource management or Personnel Management is not concerned only with hiring and firing of employees. “The purpose of Human resource management is to improve the productive contribution of people to the organization in ways that are strategically and effective”(Frost, pg.17, 2001). Personnel management, as a specialist function, concerns itself with the fact that except for the sole proprietor, business employs or needs to employ-staff.
The interview may be the only tool (Thomas JR. nelson J.K 1996 pg. 326), which is used for selection, or it may form one stage in a sequence of eliminating hurdles. These can include medical checks, school reports, references, intelligence tests, personality tests, aptitude tests and group assessment techniques. For most cases, Nike requires a curriculum vitae and to interview the employee. Today, it is positively detrimental for all concerned. It is a truism, which the law seems to be making constantly truer; that it is a lot easier to get the wrong people in, than get them out. They may only be eased out finally after a considerable amount of humiliation and bitterness, which helps neither the employer nor the employee. This discipline can only be achieved with effort. It is after all, much easy to say "I just did not take to him", but you may have lost the organization an effective worker or even potential savior. So we start with discipline and the embodiment of this will be found in the stages of preparation for selection interviewing that will be described shortly. During the entire process, individualized employee focus helps recruit and retain talent. The employee focus of the personnel function covers counseling individuals on such issues as development, career moves and discipline, ensuring privacy and confidentiality of personal information and ensuring that current staff and job applicants are given full and accurate information concerning their employment within the organization.
