Feature film - Gladiator vs 8 Mile
When I see a movie, I want to be entertained. After a tiring and long day at school, I want to come home to be entertained, not to endure more thinking by wondering how Tom Cruise comes back to life in Vanilla Sky. Most movies aim to entertain their audiences, to create the ‘big bucks’ and go on to become a blockbuster. Of course there will always be exceptions to this, such as Vanilla Sky which made me think, but many movies such as Gladiator and 8 Mile are classic new-age movies in which their respective directors aim to entertain the viewer. Can you tell me now that after your viewing of a classic James Bond movie, you sat there and wondered what kind of morals, values and attitudes were brought up throughout the movie? Many people see movies to escape reality, to ‘get lost in the movie’ or ‘fantasy’ for a few hours. Hollywood directors are more than welcome to accommodate this need, and get rich in the process. In a feature film like Gladiator, the audience is taken to ancient Rome, a time we can only dream of. It consists of glorious battlefields and fights, swords and shields. Such events in the movie provide excellent entertainment in something we could never experience. On the other hand
Eminem, an entertainment icon himself, is the perfect actor to play the underdog Rabbit in 8 Mile. His jokes, and the lyrics of his music, are entertaining especially when he ‘battles’ and interacts with his gang members. Costumes the protagonists wear also add to the depth of the movie and therefore its entertainment value. Maximus is almost always wearing his full battle armor, a product of the time, symbolizing his strength. Rabbit is in the best clothes his money buys which symbolizes his poverty. The actual story of both films, the archetypal champion I also found of entertainment value. I found that my viewing of Gladiator, influenced my later viewing of 8 Mile as, though the stories in each feature film are very different, I knew from my viewing of Gladiator, that the protagonist in 8 Mile would ‘win out’ against the antagonist through a ‘battle’ of some sorts.
