Memories
Throughout the novel, Thousand Cranes, both of the parents of Kikuji are deceased. This plays an important role on the character of Kikuji as well as other characters throughout the novel such as Mrs. Ota, Fumiko, and Kurimoto Chikako. Mr. Mitani, Kikuji’s father, has an important impact on the characters in the novel. Each character remembers something about this man, Mr. Mitani, and sometimes forgets that he is gone and just assumes Kikuji is his father. Even though Kikuji’s father is deceased, on many occasions Kikuji’s father is remembered by Kikuji and brought so called back to life. At the very beginning of the novel, Kikuji receives an invitation from the Kurimoto Chikako for the tea ceremony at the inner cottage of Engakuji. He has not been to a tea ceremony since the death of his father. Whenever he receives these invites for the ceremonies he feels that they are more of a formal gesture rather than a true invite. Kikuji believes that these people are only inviting him because of who his father was, not for Kikuji himself. After receiving this particular invite, Kikuji reminisced one occasion when he was eight or nine years old, him and his father went to Kurimoto Chikako’s tea ceremony and K
Kikuji loves his father very much and throughout the novel he reminisces about the events that happened when he was younger. No matter how hard Kikuji is pushed he will try his hardest to do the best that he can do in order to make his father proud. Mr. Mutani is not forgotten about, even though he is deceased, Mr. Mutani is living on through Kikuji Mutani. When Fumiko asked Kikuji not to have any relationship with her mother, Kikuji accepted. At this time he realized that if Fumiko can forgive Kikuji for his actions with Mrs. Ota then he can forgive his father for having Mrs. Ota as a mistress. In Kikuji’s eyes he needed something to counteract to make things better so he could forgive his father for having this mistress. Kikuji is probably hurt by the way his father has acted toward his mother as well as toward Mrs. Ota. Another example of his wanting of his father to be there is when Fumiko tells her mother that her and Mr. Mutani should have had a child together. This information shocked Kikuji and he now feels for Fumiko more so than he does for her mother. Kikuji feels guilty for wanting to see Mrs. Ota and he doesn’t know if there is a reason to even feel guilty of if it’s his father’s ghost. This is a definite example
