The Sum of All Roles

Each character have different roles which are very important in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but they have similar relationships. I will compare and contrast the relationship between Puck and Oberon against the relationship between Nick Bottom and Peter Quince. Afterwards, consider the different roles each character is given; then discuss how they do and do not live up to those roles, and why. Moreover, discuss how are these roles useful and how are they dangerous.

Oberon, the king of fairies, has a problem getting the love of Titania back caused by an Indian Boy. He feels jealousy and try to convince her by talking his way in, but Titania refuses. “Why should Titania cross her Oberon?” (2.1.122). Looking for an answer, he commands Puck, his servant and loyal friend, to apply a magic flower, which will put her under a spell and fall in love with somebody else instead of the Indian boy, to apply to her eyes.” Fetch me that flower … Fetch me that flower…’’ (2.1.175,179). Puck is almost the right hand of Oberon and obeys his commands with no doubt. “Fear not my lord. Your servant shall do so” (2.1.276). Oberon, at the same time, tries to help an Athenian men in love trouble. He tries to be

The roles that are given to those characters are somewhat useful and dangerous. The role that is given to Oberon, which is to be the king of fairies, is useful and dangerous. It is useful because he tries to help the lovers that are in trouble by placing them back were Lysander loves Hermia, and Demetrius loves Helena. His role is also dangerous because he uses a magic potion on Titania to put her on a spell and change her love from the Indian Boy. It is dangerous because he could loose the love of Titania and change her life forever. The role of Puck is dangerous speaking love wise. His role is as a mischief-loving causing the roles to exchange their love to one another with the magic flower or potion. This could’ve ruined the life of them forever. Although Puck might think its funny; it isn’t, it is very dangerous. The roles of Quince and Bottom are useful because one of them is organized, Quince, and the other is bossy, Bottom. They want to entertain the people instead of harm them. Although they think their rehearsal is good, but the people think is horrible and laugh. It is very bad and stupid, but Theseus, the king, likes it.

Although Bottom and Quince barely knew each other, they have a similar relationship with Oberon and Puck. Oberon and Puck are like friends and share their opinions and discuss their problems. The same goes with Bottom and Quince. They share and discuss their problems and their ideas: “Peter Quince?,” says Bottom, “What sayest thou bully Bottom,” says Quince, “There are things in this comedy of Pyramus and Thisbe that will never please” (3.1.7-10). Oberon and Puck share their opinions together: “How now, mad spirit? What night-rule now about this haunted grove?,” says Oberon,” My mistress with a monster is in love,” says Puck, (3.2.4-6). Also, these four character like to live to their
