A Rose For Emily

When people begin to age they are often faced with many psychological and physical changes. In the short story, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, Miss Emily leads a difficult life. Letting go is one of the common problems older people are faced to deal with because of their fear of being alone. Many older people have trouble letting go of those who are close to them. Miss Emily has a lot of trouble letting go of her father, of her friend Homer Barron, and of her old traditions.

In “A Rose for Emily” William Faulkner demonstrates ones troubles of letting go of someone close to you. Everyday millions of people have to say good-bye to someone they love. Miss Emily, an older woman from Jefferson, Mississippi, has trouble saying good-bye to the ones she loved. In this short story, Faulkner shows us through Miss Emily how older people have trouble letting go of the ones they love.

Miss Emily lives in a very old house that needs to be repaired dramatically. “An eyesore among eyesores,” is how Faulkner describes the house in the story to show that Miss Emily has a problem letting go. This

Another character that Faulkner puts in this story to show us that Miss Emily has trouble letting go is Homer Barron. Homer was in town to pave the streets of the town. After a while Miss Emily started to fall in love with Homer. “Then some of the ladies began to say that it was a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people (p.55).” This was not a disgrace to Miss Emily though, because finally since her father’s death she had someone to be with and someone to love her. This made her happy, “Miss Emily her head high (p.55).” Homer ended up leaving just for a little while and then came back for a couple of days just to see Miss Emily. Faulkner had Miss Emily kill Homer in the story to show her problem of letting go. After Miss Emily killed Homer she kept him in a bed in the house and slept with him so she would not be alone. Homer made Miss Emily feel good about herself because she was not alone anymore. This is why Miss Emily poisoned him because she did not want Homer to leave her for good. If he even left her she would be alone with no one to love her.
