SC Representative Jim DeMint
The four special interest groups I have chosen to discuss are: the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the Family Research Council (FRC) (who both hold conservative views), the National Abortion Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL), and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (who hold more liberal viewpoints). Each of these groups have given Representative Jim DeMint a percentage score based, predominantly, on the number of times that he voted in favor of their position on bills that concerned them the most, however, other influences such as opinions, party loyalties, and sources of campaign financing are sometimes factored in as well. One reason for the scoring is to inform the group’s members and non-members just how in sync the candidate’s views and/or actions are with the issues important to the group. This could signal them to either give their support to that candidate or to his or her competition. Another reason is to try and influence public opinion to shift in favor of a candidate that supports the group’s issues. They do this by giving a candidate a really low score, or by singing the praises of their preferred candidate while highlighting the lows of the other. Each group has its own methods for compu
The National Abortion Reproductive Rights Action League is a group that promotes the passage of laws supporting a woman’s right to choose. According to NARAL DeMint voted in favor of their views 0% of the time he has been in office. This group takes a specific and narrow view of the issues decided on by Congress. NARAL bases its score only on bills concerning a mother’s right to choose, and to be protected while exercising that right. Representative Jim DeMint as well as the vast majority of republicans have not supported the issues important to NARAL, whereas a majority of democrats have, so NARAL has no reason to lend any support to DeMint, or any republican for that matter. They want their absolute zero percent score to imply that DeMint does not support women’s reproductive rights, with the hope that it will keep voters from choosing him. Special interest groups rate political officials by any method that they choose. They generally give higher scores to candidates that they feel will support the issues that are important to them with the hope that the score will influence voter’s opinions. As a result the scores posted by interest groups are biased and one-sided. So a voter must consider ratings expressed by groups on opposite ends of the spectrum in order to receive a more complete pictur
