Sadomasochism
The sadist in the sadomasochistic pair is the person who inflicts the pain or punishment; the masochist is the person who submits to the pain, humiliation or control of his or her partner. What appears to the outsider to be painful, even very painful, is experienced as somewhat painful but mostly pleasurable and very sexually arousing to the sadomasochist. Many people who do not think of themselves as SM practitioners enjoy giving and receiving hickeys, bites, scratches and spankings during passionate sex. Sadomasochists simply extend this to include other tool such as whips, slappers, paddles, clothes pins and so forth. Sadomasochists represent all races, religions, and ethnicities. Individuals associated with this lifestyle are often reported as highly intelligent, and mostly of the age in the mid-thirties or older. Welcoming anyone with interest to their lifestyle, younger, curious individuals, such as those in their twenties are reported as “short lived” in the sadomasochistic communities, due to the intimidation of the strength in character, and maturity the dedicated symbolize. Although “short lived”, many individuals return years later finding the desire irresistible. Sadism comes from the name of the Marquis de Sade (1740-1814), a noble French sexologist. Masochism comes from the name of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895). Both men were positive, moral, and creative, and highly recognized for it. De Sade and von Sacher-Masoch were fearless in their erotic fantasies, and they can show us how our fiercest fantasies come from the same place as our most tender loves.
