Sand And Blue Skies

“I used to dream about places like this. Back when I was in second grade. Sometimes during school, while Mrs. Perkins was trying to teach us how to divide math problems and do fractions. And sometimes when I didn’t want to take a bath and my mother was scolding me for it.”

I look at her face as I say this. My beautiful Melissa. Irish-European. Coal-black-hair and baby blue eyes. And she is all mine. I wonder how she feels right about now, as we stand in the tall grassy fields of Oklahoma. The wind is breathing slowly down our necks, brushing our cheeks in a slow silent greeting of hello. The sun is about to set in the east, purple violet and pinkish orange clouds billow away with the wind. And here we stand just the two of us. In mutual silence. Sometimes I find it amazing how easy it is for us to be in each other’s company. No frantic kissing, nothing like that. We just sit there and hold hands. As long as we can.

As I look at her I see her in a whole different perspective. Around others she seems so aloof with who she is, untouchable. She seems to stay by herself. She seems to wait for the time that we spend together silently. I do to. And I cherish it with all my heart. I do.

After lunch I head to history class. This is truly my favorite class of all. Right now we are learning about the French-Indian or Native-American war. What makes this class so fun is the way that it is taught? Most classes, you might read the book out loud and then the teacher might give you a worksheet or an essay to do on the subject. But in this class, Mr. Alexander has us team up with other classmates and we learn the lesson by seeing it from different point of views. Which I like to do a lot so that I can compare them to my perspective viewpoint. And after that we will present our mutual conclusion as a group. It makes a lot of us look forward to Mr. Alexander’s class. Whenever we need help he is always ready and willing to answer our questions in hopes that it will motivate us to learn. Sometimes I stay behind and tutor. A student named Kirsten has been my latest assignment. She has just started high school. She is a very young fourteen, in the ninth grade. And unfortunately I think that she has a crush on me. She tells me that she has just moved here from New Hampshire. I walked her home one night and as we got to the front porch, her father came out and he was about to say something but he saw me and just glared at her. With her head down she quietly told me goodbye and said that she would see me tomorrow. I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach as I walked over to Mellissa’s house. Even when I was with Mellissa I could not stop thinking about that girl. It got worst the next day when she did not come to school. I knew something was wrong then. I grabbed Stanley and we both got in my car and drove to the neighborhood that she lived in. we parked down the street and then we got out of the car and walked over to the house. I was going to open the gate but then I got a weird feeling in the back of my neck. So we both went around back. As we got closer to the shed I began to hear muffled crying. I walked slowly to the door and then I heard the grunts of a man mixed in with the squeals of pain. It did not take long for me to figure out what was going on and it was sickening. I turned to Stanley and told him to go get the car. I looked for something, a weapon basically because I knew that I was going to need it. I found a long stick of wood and I ran to the shed door and I kicked it in. I had to let my eyes adjust to the dark because it was so light outside. And when I did the sight that I saw made me livid with anger. That girls father was on top and was . . . I could not stand it and I snatched him by his throat and I quickly hauled him into the air with a strength that I did I know that I possessed. I went into a solid rage as I thought about it more and more. So I went off. I beat him all over with the stick that I brought as his daughter laid there on the ground too tired to even move. I doubt that she was even strong enough to move. After I finished with that man I was tired. I dropped his unconscious body and I walked over to her. She held her arms up to me from the ground and I squatted down to pick her up and I walked out into the sunlight with tears at the corners of my eyes. As I looked at this little girl that I was able to carry easily I saw so much innocence and vulnerability. And I could not imagine why a parent with such a beautiful child would throw away a relationship like this. How could they even think like that? I reach the car just as Stanley pulls up. I put her in the front seat and toss him the keys and tell him to take her to my house and wait out front. Do not get out no matter what is what I told him. Meanwhile I went back into the house and grabbed him by the throat and told him in so many words that are not allowed, to get out of town and don’t come back or I would have to kill him. And I walked out very quickly because the thought of killing him sounded pretty good right about then.

I look over at Stanley Tromp. He has been my best friend since kindergarten. Over at Green lake Elementary
