Individuals that feel assisted suicide should be legalized need to think about the alternatives and what is available to prolong the lives of loved ones. New methods of pain management enable the ill to live better lives. Diagnosis of mental illness and depression will allow for treatment and eliminate low feelings, low self-esteem, and drained feelings. It is too easy to say their lives are fruitless and filled with nothing but pain and misery. The best thing we can offer loved ones in time of illness, loneliness, helplessness is our support, care, and understanding to make them feel wanted. Remember, suicide does not end the pain it just passes it on to someone else.

Many of the requests for assisted suicide are linked to unrelieved pain along with other discomforts. Modern technology in pain management has the capability to control approximately ninety-five percent of the cases. The main reasons people still suffer are many medical facilities still use outdated or inadequate methods. When proper treatment of pain is administered, patients who initially wanted to end their lives, change their decision. Foley concludes in her journal how proper pain management has mitigated patient wishes for assisted suicide (6: 290).

Laws currently state that it is a criminal offense to assist in the suicide of anyone. The United States Supreme Court decision in the year 1997 stated, “The average American has no Constitutional right to a physician assisted suicide.” The vote was a unanimous decision of nine to zero. One implication made by the court was there is no constitutional bar that would prevent a state from passing a law permitting physician-assisted suicide. One state acted on this and passed a law on October 27, 1997 called The Death with Dignity Law. Since that date one hundred and twenty-nine people have committed this death. Studies have shown that not all patients that requested assisted suicide and received their dosage have actually used them. During 2002, physicians in Oregon gave fatal prescriptions to about seventy-five terminally ill individuals. Thirty-eight of the recipients used them to commit suicide.
