Years ago I would argue that wearing school uniforms infringes on freedom of self- expression and individuality however now that I’m older I support the wearing of school uniforms in public school at the elementary, middle and also high-school levels. School uniforms may not solve the problem of violence or disruptive behavior in the public schools, but it is a step in the right direction. The implementation of uniforms can promote good order and discipline, communicate respect, reduce the competition/envy of brand-name clothing, and provide a serious learning environment.
Peer pressure in school can be overwhelming. At times peer pressure can entice students to do things they may not normally do. Keeping with "In-Style" clothing and accessories at school can be emotionally taxing to students and expensive to the parents. Some might say that mandating school uniforms is just a temporary approach to the real problems of our public school system. The public school system still has under paid and under qualified teachers. Many public schools also have inadequate books and supplies. It is very apparent that school uniforms can promote good order and discipline, and reduce the competition/envy of brand-name clothing that often times creates many social problems of theft and unwanted distractions. This policy is not going to stop the disruptions and problems that occur at our schools but it’s a good deterrence to start with.
School uniforms can stimulate a serious learning environment. When a uniform replaces the distraction of what a student has to wear to school, that energy can be transferred into schoolwork and academics become more important.
