School Violence

Violence among young people in society is increasing dramatically. Perhaps what is most alarming is that these violent acts are not only occurring on the streets, but in the school systems as well. School violence is defined as any physical or verbal attack on a person while on school grounds or on school property. In earlier decades, school violence merely involved delinquency and the occasional fight. However, school violence has become a problem which has plagued the nation for the past several years. There has been an increase in the amount and the degree of violence. Students are now bringing guns, knives, and other weapons to school, and many are using them to hurt and kill. With incidents such as the shooting rampage in Littleton, Colorado, the public has become increasingly concerned with ways of predicting and reducing violence in the schools. The problem is how to reduce the amount of violence in America’s schools. The purpose of this study is to investigate the major factors of school violence, the effects of school violence, and the methods of prevention. Many schools in America have instituted “conflict resolution” programs as a part of their curriculum (Walker, 1995). There programs are aimed at addressing the complex issues fostering violence in schools. Students are taught different methods to use when faced with a conflict. Most programs involve training students in empathy, cooperation, perspective taking, which helps peers to settle their differences peacefully (Walter, 1995). Conflict resolution programs also involve the use of school psychologists and counselors, who can assist in solving a conflict before it turns violent 9Furlong & Morrison, 1994). Although it is not conclusively known how conflict resolution programs reduce school violence, research has shown that these programs are effective in reducing the number of students given discipline referrals, as well as improving the climate of the school (Walker, 1995).

The problem is how to reduce the amount of violence in America’s schools. It was hypothesized that increased security would solve the problem of school violence. However, this study concludes that the most effective way to decrease school violence is increasing school security in combination with conflict resolution programs and zero tolerance policies.

Some school districts have implemented a uniform policy for their students. Although many students adamantly oppose wearing uniforms, they have been proven effective in reducing crime in many school districts. Parents and educators believe that putting children in identical clothing promotes a sense of unity among the school while relieving tension in the classroom (Chatterjee, 1999). School uniforms ate also effective in improving security in schools. An teacher or administrator can easily spot an intruder if the entire student body is wearing the same attire.

School is traditionally seen as a safe haven for staff and students. However, in the past several yars, schools have become incrasinlgy associated with violence. With cooperation between parents, students, staff, and the community, the problem of school violence can be solved.
