Romiette and Julio

I have read the book Romiette and Julio by Sharon M. It is about two teenagers from different worlds who fall in love. Romiette is black and Julio is Mexican and their love angers many people including their parents. They are continuously threatened by one gang in particular called the Devildogs. .
I loved the plot of the story because it was like a modern Romeo and Juliet. It was interesting because it was filled with details and I was able to paint pictures of the story. The only down side of the plot was as I read it I kept comparing it to Romeo and Juliet and I doubt that was the authors purpose of writing the story. All in all though the plot interested me and I couldn't wait to see what would happen at the end. Would they die together like Romeo and Juliet, would they be split apart due to their differences or would they live happily ever after? I liked the way the story kept me tied up and wasn't just a predictable fairy tale. I loved the ending of the story because it didn't just lay everything out flat it left me imagining what would go on to happen between Romiette and Julio.
I loved the characters in the story because they all were interesting and unique in their own way. I liked the way the author used the characters to deal with delicate issues such as love, and friendship. I liked the way she kept me interested in the characters while also dealing with more serious issues such as violence and gangs. Each character's name was fitting, Romiette and Julio, ironically lovers as in Romeo and Juliet, and Destiny the psychic always predicting someone else's "destiny." .
I liked the author's style of writing and the creativity she used when writing Romiette and Julio. She combined comedy and important issues into a great book that would entertain as well as inform. She taught us that when you are in trouble sometimes it is best to get help rather than handle the situation on your own.
