Binge Eating & Obesity

It is estimated that 30% of people treated for health problems associated with obesity have binge eating disorder. Most people with this disorder developed the problem following attempts at dieting. (Eda Information Pack)

With these numbers, there are many more sufferers with binge eating disorder than with Anorexia and Bulimia combined, yet we rarely see or read in the news about this disorder. I can tell you from first hand experience, those with Binge Eating Disorder feel no less shame and guilt than someone with Bulimia for their behaviour.

When we hear the term "eating disorder" a lot of people wouldn't know that binge eating is a recongnised disorder itself. Many sufferers just feel that they are out of control with their eating, or gluttonous or greedy and do not actively seek help.


The diet industry is built on repeat business. That ought to be a clear sign that diets don't work.

We keep buying into trendy advertised hype that knows only one ideal shape and size for women - the "thin ideal", which is an unrealistic and unattainable goal for nearly all of us except the tiny minority of models and celebrities who actually look like that. And do they look like that because of their industries demands for lean, trimmed perfection?

and attempting to change our levels of body fat, imagine if we found ways to improve our body image and levels of self-acceptance.

It's a vicious circle that people can and do remain trapped in for years, or decades.
