Sex And The Catholic Church

It has been said that the two most powerful drives in a human, besides the practical need for food and shelter, are sex and religion. The sexual urge is strong in nearly everyone, as advertisers of everything from chocolates to cars can tell you, and the urge to worship the divine (by whatever name) is also strongly present in many. In early religions, sex was celebrated as an affirmation of life. It was felt to be a foundational part of the order of the world and of human nature. Therefore, separating it from religion was unthinkable and a kind of contradiction in terms. Many who followed the teachings of Jesus were converts from Pagan religions that used heterosexual and homosexual activities as a means of worship. Religious Fundamentalists argue that sexual acts outside a marriage are immoral, even then sex is only to be used as a means for procreation and is not meant to be thoroughly enjoyed.

Homosexuality, according to them, is an abomination that has always been condemned in the Bible. “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable”(Leviticus 7:22). This is the quote that most often justifies Christian homophobia. The Gay and Lesbian community should be welcomed i

One of the Fundamentalist views is that women must also bear as many children as God sees fit. Since the church’s traditional views of contraception, or rather lack of it, have led many woman to the brink of insanity. Because of this, the introduction of “artificial” birth control or the pill, was a god send. Unfortunately, the church does not really endorse is birth control. The issue of contraception has been an extremely controversial and debated one in the Catholic Church. The Catholic religion declares that the three requirements for healthy sexual expression include a mutual physical drive for pleasure, intimacy and committed love between the couple, and the openness to procreation and parenting children. This last aspect is the subject of much disagreement between people both inside and outside the church community. The authoritative voice of the church, holds that artificial contraception is a sin and only accepts the form of contraception called Natural Family Planning. This method involves avoiding sexual intercourse during certain times of the month .

Although there’s a lot of negative feedback because of negative images of sex in the Bible, Episcopalians have been ordaining gay and lesbian priests since the 1970s, Presbyterians and Catholics are now adopting moderate views on homosexuality and many other mainstream religions are becoming aware of changes needed in their preaching due to the continuous sexual revolution. Some may think that all homosexuals are bound for Hell, but hopefully some day people will be able to live their lives without being judged for their actions of love.

In Leviticus 18:20 and 20:10, adultery was defined as a man having sexual intercourse with his neighbor's wife. Deuteronomy 22:23 extends this prohibition to a man sleeping with a woman who is engaged to be married. If a man has an affair with an unmarried woman, the act is not considered adultery. Although God wanted men to only have one wife, married men on many occasions visited prostitutes and received no punishment for this sin. This was a double standard among the sexes for a woman got severely punished if she committed such a sin. A man who committed adultery did not commit a wrongful act against his wife, but rather against his male neighbor implying that a woman did not matter.

Recently a problem though has occurred in which people have been arrested for either promoting sexual intercourse or participating in the act. Two recent court cases that have dealt with the concept of sex being unmoral are Griswold versus Connecticut and Bowers versus Hardwick. Both of these cases brought up new questions about whether different kinds of sex are moral or not. The first case was Griswold versus Connecticut. This case was about Estelle Griswold who opened a birth control clinic in 1961 in Connecticut. This clinic was made with the belief that they would soon be caught breaking one of the many Connecticut sex laws. Three days after it opened Griswold was arrested after giving birth control to a married couple. The other case was Bowers versus Hardwick. This case involved a man named Michael Hardwick who was caught by a police officer having anal sex with another man in his own home. There is law in Georgia that states that anal sex is illegal so Hardwick was immediately arrested. Whether or not the Church would agree with these court cases is a difficult question to answer. The churches opinion on sex has changed throughout history.
