Seven Steps To Effective Problem Solving

Problem solving can often feel like a daunting task and all of us regularly have to solve problems in our daily lives. I know in my own personal life solving problems and choosing the right course of action can be quite overwhelming even when there are no outside interfering influences. But just as there is in my life I am sure there is in yours, others in your family or your friends can be a big influence when you attempt to solve your problems. Sometimes this influence can be positive and sometimes this influence can be negative. Whatever type the input, outside influences just make the problem solving efforts harder to implement.

I spent some time recently reviewing an article on the UOP website titled “Seven Steps Outlined for Effective Problem-Solving” and it outlines a technique which I find can be very helpful in solving many problems that may come your way. (www.bizjournals.com, 2000) The seven steps are: Identify the issues, understand everyone’s interests, list the possible solutions, evaluate the options, select an option or options, document the agreements, agree on contingencies monitoring and evaluation. I will look at and explain each one of these points individually and provide exampl

My life example was not all that complicated but it did show that using a problem solving method for examining, evaluating and creating solutions to problems in a logical manner can be most effective when dealing with any problem. I have since used this process on other problems and have found it to be quite useful. I have found times that I have not used all of the steps, but most or all of the first few are used in every case. And most of the problems I have encountered since using this method can be run through the Seven Steps in just a few minutes. More complicated problems can take longer to evaluate and solve, but the system works on almost every problem I have run through it. In conclusion, I think most people could benefit from some sort of system for solving their individual and family problems. The Seven Steps worked well for me and might work well for you also.

The sixth step is to document the agreement. This means that you don’t want to rely on your memory to keep track of the solution. Writing it down is best and will help you through the details at a later date. In my case, this part was easy. Derek chose the Utah Fun Dome as the place he wanted to go for his birthday party, so for documentation all we had to do was to call up, make reservations, send them a check, and put a note on the calendar. Easy.

The seventh and final step in the process is to agree on contingencies, monitoring and evaluation. This means that even though you think you’ve solved your problem, you still need to look at it once and awhile to make sure that your solution is working. Evaluating your solution and providing contingencies can help greatly if your solution is not going well and you need to try a different ap
