This issue is children and how the media influences them by sex and violence. Everyday in the United States and all around the world, children are bombarded by the messages and images from the media: messages about how to behave, what choice to make and what to think. Children often try to imitate what they learn from TV, video games, and the Internet. They are more susceptible to the message than adults, because they haven’t developed good judgment or the ability to process the information they are given. No one wants their kids to grow up and think that everything that they watched on TV was right, because that is not the type of person that their parents want them to be.

The main cause of this issue would have to be the media in general. Different parts of the media would contain advertising, the Internet, MTV, and soap operas. I put them in that order because I think that the majority of the people see advertising everyday whether they choose too or not. Then the other three you can choose to do.

§ Parents have to set limits to watching TV, playing video games, etc.

Parents can start by spending more time with their kids. On average, parents spend about 17 hours a week with their children, while their children spend as many as 40 hours a week using all forms of media. You can establish good media habits and values at an early age with your child and set limits on usage and help them choose the content you find appropriate. Don’t allow your kids to have a TV or computer in their room. Teach your child to ask permission to view certain things. Watch and listen with your kids and tell then what you do and don’t like and why. Allow them to only watch so much TV per day.

In the scientific literature on media violence, the connection of media violence to real-life aggressive behavior and violence has been verified. As much as 10% to 20% of real-life violence may be attributable to media violence. A recent comprehensive analysis of music videos found that nearly one fourth of all Music Television (MTV) videos portray overt violence and depict weapon carrying. Research has shown that even television news can traumatize children or lead to nightmares. In a random survey of parents with children in kindergarten through sixth grade, 37% reported that their child had been frightened or upset by a television story in the preceding year.
