The institution of slavery as a social problem in American society led to the civil war. Basically the split between north and south would be over that very issue, slavery. The expansion of slavery west of the Mississippi would determine if the newly formed states would become slave or free states. With new states being formed they had to first determine what direction their state would go in on this topic since their future would depend on it. At all levels the states were conflicting on this issue. The different opposing views of the democratic party and the newly formed republican party constantly disagreed on the issues of secession and slavery. These topic's literally divided our country in half leaving us not as one nation but as broken nation. This problem would divide many states left within its border like Kentucky, Tennessee and others. These states would become major battlegrounds for the war. Although not everyone would agree war was the only way to end this issue. Some people realized that war would turn brother against brother and even neighbor against neighbor, but nothing could be done to stop it. It was a inevitable conclusion since either side could see eye to eye. People black and white would give their lives fighting this war of slavery and while killing the opposition at the time they would ultimately be weakening a nation. .

The war was fought and caused over freedom for African Americans. However, when the war over slavery ended the repression was still there. After the war African Americans were freed and given positions in society, but ultimately they were still oppressed and mistreated in American culture. The war may have freed slaves but it didn't educate, give responsibility or even allow them to vote. African Americans would not receive equal treatment until the 1950's and 1960's with the massive civil rights movements, giving them more opportunities to be a part of American society.
