When I started to try to write this I felt it would be difficult because what stereotypes do men have that are bad. Well a little bit of watching TV and they seemed to jump out at me. Women are seen by the media as sex objects but what are men seen as, bungling incompetent guys in the workplace and at home.
New male stereotypes have been prevalent in news, TV, films and advertisements. John Marsden is a best-selling author of Secret Men's Business, he say "teenage boys are among the most maligned group in our society, the media portrays them as drug-crazed, unemployable, suicidal, failures at school or sex criminals." This is a true statement of today's TV stars as well, looking for a father as a role model on TV turned out to be harder then I thought.
In the seventies and before the male on shows was a good father, he worked came home and did the household chores and had time for the kids. It is true that at this time women were the submissive and often seen as the unintelligent ones. Now it seems the tables have completely turned, a show like Sex and the City show women browsing for men like they are toys. They talk about the three kinds of men, Mr. Bigs is the wealthy type, then they move on to toxic bachelors who are nice and sensitive and last are the "himbos" who are only useful in bed. My girlfriend finds it funny but it actually bothers me. Is this what we are telling girls that men today are good for. Either money, sex or just a shoulder to cry , that's all a man is worth. On the other side just watch some CBS hit shows, Raymond and King of Queens are great comedies, but the problem is they depict men as morons. Most of the men are seen as lazy selfish, inconsiderate husbands as well as poor fathers. What is amazing is that now I actually pay attention to the small details, commercials that aired in between the show depicted a wimpy guy with a hot blonde. They are playing trivial pursuit the question is "how much does the average man's brain weigh? Response is not much".
