Smoking

The definition of smoking is “the inhalation and exhalation of the fumes of burning tobacco”. Cigarettes are made with finely shredded tobacco rolled in lightweight paper. It is the most popular method of smoking. In the United States, about 45 million people smoke around 480 billion cigarettes each year. Just the smoke from the average cigarette contains about 4,000 chemicals. All of this would explain all of the deaths and diseases that smoking causes.

In the 1500’s, European explorers saw Native Americans smoking tobacco leaves from a pipe. The Europeans started growing tobacco plants and soon smoking became part of the European lifestyle. Most of the tobacco was used in pipes, cigars, or as snuff. It was not until the early 20th century when cigarettes became more popular.

There are a few reasons why people smoke. At first when they are teenagers they might smoke because they think that they will be more cool if they do, but they are just fooling themselves. Others may start because of peer pressure; they might think that everyone else is doing it and t


There are also emotional, social, and financial problems associated with smoking cigarettes. An emotional problem is that the smoker might be addicted and might become discouraged or depressed that they can not quit. A social effect is that if the smoker is always smoking and smells bad, other people will not want to be around them. The big financial problem is that they are addicted and always need to keep buying more cigarettes and spend too much money on their habit. If a smoker smoked one pack of cigarettes each day, and each pack cost about $2.50, they would spend almost $900 in one year. With that money they could buy a C.D. and rent a movie every week for a year if they didn‘t waste it on cigarettes.

There are many different physical effects caused by smoking. Some of the more obvious and minor effects are yellow teeth, bad breath, and their clothes and house might smell like smoke. The risk of dying from lung diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, are increased by five times from smoking. It also increases the risk of a stroke by 50%. Resea
