Socrates was born in a time when challenging existing principles was a very dangerous proposition. In his younger years he followed in the footsteps of his father and became a sculptor until he left to fight in the Peloponnesian War. When Socrates returned to Greece after the war he decided to end his previous profession and become a philosophical speaker. As a debater he quickly gained popularity and attracted a large following. Socrates was also accused of disbelieving in the traditional gods, even though he denied these charges. He spoke openly about his daimonion, his guardian spirit or personal divine sign, and this was a concern for the leaders of Athens. The idea of Socrates’ daimonion challenged the traditional religious beliefs of Athens, as well as, the government. In response to Socrates’ daimonion they claimed that he was guilty of introducing new gods and therefore sinned against the democracy of Athens. Whether Socrates did or did not introduce new gods the traditional beliefs of Athens were challenged because those who had heard the words of Socrates now had new and different ideas of their own. These ideas could be potential problems that are detrimental to the future stability of Athenian society. Unfortunately, Socrates was convicted of these crimes and sentenced to drink poison, and died.

Socrates may have posed a threat to traditional values in history, but today his philosophies are practiced throughout the world.
