The Love of a Tragic Hero: great gatsby

Have you met anyone where love has taken he or she to the end of his or her life? Have their flaws throughout their lives overcome them? In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the character Gatsby is overwhelmed by the one thing he does not possess: love. His one fatal personality flaw, in which he lives in non-reality and creates illusions, leads to his demise. Gatsby’s love for Daisy is real and strong. It causes tension between Gatsby and Tom, Daisy’s husband, and eventually costs him his life. It is evident that Gatsby plays the role of a tragic hero for Daisy through his strange, secret dreams, the end to his fancy lifestyle, his rich, powerful ways to lure her into his heart, and his protective love he has for Daisy.
Throughout the novel, Gatsby expresses his dreams of having Daisy with extreme desire and anxiety. At the beginning the novel, Nick sees a vision of Gatsby standing alone, reaching out to the green light. We find out that the green light leads to Daisy’s house. Because Gatsby was alone and longing for Daisy, we can see the extreme desire he has for her. Nick sees this desire when “He stretched his arms to warm water”(Fitzgerald 25). This image of Gatsby helps Nick see the other side to Ga

Gatsby changes his life style, in which everyone enjoyes, in order to impress Daisy. Throughout the novel, Gatsby is known for his massive, exciting parties and it gives him his popularity among the rich. Every Saturday night there is a showdown at Gatsby’s mansion and many people look forward to music and dancing. In order to impress Daisy, Gatsby puts an end to these parties. Bloom states that Gatsby is “preoccupied by his love for Daisy that he calls off his parties, which is primarily a way to lure Daisy” (Bloom). As we can see, Gatsby chooses his love for Daisy even though his popularity is at stake. Another example of how Gatsby goes to the extreme in changing his lifestyle for Daisy is when he fires his servants to prevent gossip and rumors. Nick is stunned by the changes in Gatsby’s house and states: “My Finn informed me that Gatsby had dismissed every servant in his house a week ago and replaced them” (Fitzgerald 120). Nick has observed that Gatsby has once again changed a major part of his lifestyle in order to impress Daisy. What Nick does not know, is that Gatsby will use his power and wealth to go even furthur in trying to lure Daisy.

Gatsby uses his rich and powerful life to get the things he does not possess in his life. We are not for sure how Gatsby is so wealthy, but it is evident he has money and power. With this wealth he tries to lure Daisy into falling in love with him. For example, Gatsby uses his money to get Nick into organizing a date between Gatsby and Daisy. He sends gardeners over to Nick
