Sports After September 11th Essay
In the days following the terrorists attacks of September 11th, sports seemed to take on a less important role in our lives as the nation re-evaluated it’s priorities of everyday life. However, shortly after the tragedies, the nation saw first hand how sports played a significant role in healing the country. The American public saw the efforts that both the National Football League and Major League Baseball have taken to pay tribute to the victims of September 11th. Among other influences, sports played three major roles in helping the nation deal with the tragedies, they brought the country together, helped the United States heal from the attacks, and helped peoples’ lives return to a sense of normalcy. After the September 11th attacks, sports played a major role in bringing the people of the United States together. People, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age, or physical/mental disability, pulled together and became a united nation. . Sports helped accelerate the healing process and return to the normalcy that Sports played a vital role in the country’s healing process after the September11th attacks. Following the attacks, sporting events were viewed as an outlet for some people. Watching and partaking in sporting events, allowed a brief interval from the worry and panic caused by the terrorist attacks. When sporting events resumed, people were able to continue to take in the positive experience of “watching a game.” Sporting events became opportunities for patriotic tributes and means of distraction from dreary headlines. I in addition, Americans were now able to cheer for his/her favorite teams and players. This was another example of a good alternative to the constant negativity caused by the attacks. Furthermore, numerous athletes and teams had inspirational effects on his/her communities. For example athletes and teams looked for every opportunity to pay homage to victims of 9/11, and did this for the benefit of the victims’ families. All of these actions were a cause for hope; sporting events offered hope that America would slowly turn around and become “normal” again.
