Babies Having Babies: Teen Pregnancy

Everyday, a new baby is born to a teenage mother and father. Because of this many young teens lose out on “teen life”. I know this because I’ve been there. I gave birth at the young age of sixteen. Teen pregnancy is a very controversial problem in today’s society. Many people, especially parents want to combat teen pregnancy. One of the most argued issues about teen pregnancy is whether or not schools should be allowed to teach about and make birth control available to students. Is it?

Peer pressure is part of daily life to an adolescent. This is something that many teens will not learn to cope with for years to come. In the mix of this peer pressure, is often a push to have sex. The biggest problem with this is that many teens are not educated about their birth control options. Another problem is that often times the birth control is not readily available to them. They can find condoms in the stores but, to young teens that are not as mature as an adult, purchasing condoms can be an embarrassing adventure. In order to get the pill or shot, you must go to a doctor or a teen center such as Planned Parenthood. However, this frequently means that they will need a parental signature to obtain these methods of birth control

In closing, teen pregnancy is a problem that is here and will never go away. Maybe this is because there are so many questionable methods or ways to try and combat it that society as a whole is very up tight about. More so, is that fact that so many parents out there refuse to realize that their babies are growing up much sooner and are exploring what should be the adult world. If more parents would wake up and see that their teen is going to do whatever and whenever they feel, then protection methods and where to provide then probably would not be such a controversial issue.

In an interview with a girl I went to school with, I asked her about the issues of birth control in schools and whether or not that the GRADS and other teen programs are useful, resourceful and necessary. First I must say that she is twenty-three and has three children and is currently pregnant with her forth. My friend replied that she completely agrees with condoms being provided in schools. It might have prevented several pregnancies for her in high school. She did not use birth control on her own out of embarrassment of having to purchase them and the lack of funds to do so anyway. As for GRADS that she was also enrolled in, it was an excellent program that is wonderful for teens needing more information on any pregnancy, raising a child or birth control methods.

According to the article “Availability of Condoms Doesn’t Spark Teen Sex” from the May 29, 2003 issue of the Columbus Dispatch; Teenagers at high schools where condoms were available, they were no more likely to have sex. The teens still had sex the same that they were in schools that did not provide birth control. In fact, they youths that had the protection provided through their school were more likely to use the condoms and have protected sex! The study showed
