Stiffer Penalties

All the windows were closed, and all of the doors were locked. The sun went down on the school, and that is when the school was broken into by three of the youngsters that attended the school. The school was Murray Middle School. The students had a huge plan to trash the school. They brought in shaving cream, toilet paper, and one other thing. The other thing was far worse than the others. The three boys came into the school and immediately started to spray the shaving cream all over the lockers and inside of the classrooms that were unlocked. While in the rooms, the boys threw papers, books, and toilet paper everywhere, destroying hundreds possibly thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. They repeated this process through every room that was unlocked. They used all of the shaving cream and toilet paper, and then they proceeded to urinate in the main hallway. They were caught and brought before the principal of the school as well as a juvenile court litigation process. They were all expelled and were also given other things that they were not allowed to do when they returned to school. However, for all of the crimes that they committed: breaking and entering, vandalism, and conspiracy to commit

I think that the age of eighteen is too old. John Straub Jr., a twenty-two year college student from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, believes that the age is too high as well. He thinks that the age that a young adult is considered an adult should be when they are given the right to drive a motor vehicle. “When they are given the keys to a car, they are given a potentially lethal weapon,” said Straub. Straub feels that from ages thirteen to fifteen the penalties for offenders should be harsher. For example, there should be other places such as rehabilitation centers where young offenders can not only be punished for their crime but also receive help and counseling if need be. “It is better if whatever rehabilitation program is planned takes place in some sort of detention facility. They can still be separated from hardened adult criminals, but that does not mean they should not be detained for similar periods of time” (Debatabase). Straub also believes that if the crime committed is a violent crime it should always be on their record regardless of their behavior after the crime is committed. However, for those that commit a non-violent crime, it would come off of their record when they turn eighteen years of age. The use of boot camp is good in my opinion. Many of the criminals would benefit from the discipline that they would develop from attending a military-like boot camp.

I think that juveniles under the age of thirteen sh
