Teflon Applications

The accidental discovery of Teflon is one of the many inventions stumbled upon that have altered the way we live. Dr. Roy Plunkett was working on Freon related refrigerants when he discovered spontaneous polymerization of a sample of frozen, compressed tetrafluoroethylene. This form of Teflon, known as polytetrafluoroethylene, or more commonly as PTFE, is used today as an advanced fluoropolymer additive known as Zonyl. Zonyl is used in lubricants to amplify the lubricants’ qualities.

Teflon is considered the most slippery material in existence. It has a low coefficient of friction, and a high chemical resistance, providing it with this outstanding attribute. It is inert to almost all substances. Extreme temperature resistance allows it to be applied in products that reach extensive temperatures. Its melting point is 327 degrees C. Combined with that, its non-stick and non-wetting qualities make Teflon a perfect material for use in cooking and in engines. It is electrically nonconductive which makes it ide

Teflon was the obvious choice for this product. Zonyl could not exist without it. Zonyl is an additive of extremely fine white powder with its base in Teflon. The size of Zonyl allows for PTFE’s properties to be better applied to the lubricants to which it is added.

Teflon was essentially an accident. While experimenting with Freon gases at the Dupont Laboratory, Dr. Plunkett left Freon in a container overnight. When he returned the next day, he and his colleagues found a waxy, white, solid substance in the container. They had accidentally found a solid fluorocarbon that Dr. Plunkett nicknamed Teflon.

al for use as a safety material, providing electrical insulation.

By adhering to the moving parts in an engine, lubricants with Zonyl bond to the surface and allow parts to move more freely. They lower the coefficient of friction of the materials they are bonded too, which reduces heat generated by the moving parts and will reduces wear. The better the lubricant, the less wear on the parts it is bon
