The accidental discovery of Teflon is one of the many inventions stumbled upon that have altered the way we live. Dr. Roy Plunkett was working on Freon related refrigerants when he discovered spontaneous polymerization of a sample of frozen, compressed tetrafluoroethylene. This form of Teflon, known as polytetrafluoroethylene, or more commonly as PTFE, is used today as an advanced fluoropolymer additive known as Zonyl. Zonyl is used in lubricants to amplify the lubricants’ qualities. Teflon is considered the most slippery material in existence. It has a low coefficient of friction, and a high chemical resistance, providing it with this outstanding attribute. It is inert to almost all substances. Extreme temperature resistance allows it to be applied in products that reach extensive temperatures. Its melting point is 327 degrees C.
