Tarot: The Divining

Dusk grows near as an old wooden wagon sits, a cloth draped over its side. Painted on the cloth, a hand and a set of eyes. Inside, an old woman sits, dressed in decorative cloth of moons and stars. Large hoops of silver adorn her ears, which hide behind locks of dark, wavy curls. The silence breaks as she shuffles a deck of old, tattered cards. She lays out each one in three rows, as her paying customer peers at them, waiting for the meaning. Throughout history, people have been captivated by the tools of fortune telling. From crystal balls to palm reading, there’s always been a question: how? The Tarot cards, perhaps, spark the most interest in people’s imaginations.

The Tarot were brought to Europe by the Gypsies, once thought to have come from Egypt. It is now know that they came from India. “The Tarot cards are the oldest known of decks; their exact origin long lost. The most popular theory is that they were brought into Europe by the Gypsies; probably originating--as did the Gypsies themselves--in India” (Buckland 111). There are also believers that Tarot came from ancient Egypt. “Tarot symbols have been linked to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics found in temples and on the tombs of

things that you do not know. That is not always true. Many people use readings for self-evaluation and uplifting. “Simply put, Tarot cards are a means of predicting

events or receiving guidance in both our inner (spiritual) and outer (manifest) world” (Garen 10). The deck informs you of things you need to know. If there is something not vital to you at the present time, it will not be revealed. Many people ask how laying out cards on a table can do anything at all. Some non-scientific people believe in spirits, other people say it’s a subconcous act. Many people of science who do believe say that you interpret the cards so they will make sense. The same two people could have the same cards laid out but get completely different readings because of how their mind wants them to think of it. “You will find it is a different thing each time you read the cards, giving a different reading for each individual” (Buckland 144, Buckland’s).

The Tarot deck is mostly thought to be used to see into the future or find out

The deck is divided into two major parts; the Major and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana are numbered, and when appearing in a spread, normally show a person’s state of mind. The Minor Arcana are further divided into four suits, which vary from deck to deck. The most common combination are pentacles, cups, swords, and wands. The pentacles are also known as coins and are related to the element of Earth.

It was because of the banning of cards that started the controversy of intentions of the Tarot. Some say that God has already revealed everything we need to know about our present and our future through Divine Revelation and the Church. Tools of fortune telling were thought to be powered by the Devil a
