Tarot: The Divining
Dusk grows near as an old wooden wagon sits, a cloth draped over its side. Painted on the cloth, a hand and a set of eyes. Inside, an old woman sits, dressed in decorative cloth of moons and stars. Large hoops of silver adorn her ears, which hide behind locks of dark, wavy curls. The silence breaks as she shuffles a deck of old, tattered cards. She lays out each one in three rows, as her paying customer peers at them, waiting for the meaning. Throughout history, people have been captivated by the tools of fortune telling. From crystal balls to palm reading, there’s always been a question: how? The Tarot cards, perhaps, spark the most interest in people’s imaginations. The Tarot were brought to Europe by the Gypsies, once thought to have come from Egypt. It is now know that they came from India. “The Tarot cards are the oldest known of decks; their exact origin long lost. The most popular theory is that they were brought into Europe by the Gypsies; probably originating--as did the Gypsies themselves--in India” (Buckland 111).
