Everyone questions why children are having children? Or Why are teens in such a rush to have sex? These are topics on talk shows and at meetings. With children as young as 12 having sex and sometimes getting pregnant as a result, it is so complex to answer these questions. There are many theories expressed by adults who work with pregnant teens. Trying to pinpoint this social problem amongst adolescents that researchers interview, they found similarities. They cited neglect, abuse, and moral neglect. Several of the teens admitted that they were lonely, they lacked self-esteem, peer pressure, absent parents, single mothers, sexual and physical abuse, drugs, and a lack of a father figure. From seeing first hand how teenage pregnancy can alter your life, I opt to abstain from sex. And with doing this project, it opened my eyes to see that teen pregnancy stems deeper in ones self. Throughout this research I have stumble upon facts that I believe to be true. Such as the fact that teenage girls have babies so that they can have someone to love them and that they want to be more mature socially in the world. I hear about this topic on talk shows and from friends. It shocks me because why would you put yourself in the position to take care of a child for one when you are a child and two, when you don’t have the means to support a child.

Among the 15-17 year olds the rate climbed 23 percent from 1985 to 1994, from 31 per thousand to 38 percent. But the age group 15-19 has dropped 3 percent. One million teens get pregnant every year, and slightly more than half give birth. 85 percent of these pregnancies are unintentional. Most of the fathers are not teens, but older men. The younger the female, the older the male. 24 million teens live in poverty. Nearly 40 percent of the 15-19 year olds in this country are poor or low income , and many grow up in economic, social, and ethnic ghettos. One-third of 15 year olds reported that their parents never talked to them about sex pregnancy , and one-half said a parent had not discussed birth control, or sexually transmitted diseases to them. When parental influences are low, peer influences are high. With the absence of a strong relationship between parent and child, the child will turn to friends and if their friends are having sex, a teen will most likely do the same.

My personal belief is that we as a society, must solve this problem, not just because it is human to care for children and their children, but it is proper and morally right to save our society. If we do not find a way to break the cycle of teenage pregnancy and poverty, we will all suffer, not just the teens and their children. We as a society cannot continue to widen the gap between the haves and have-nots. I have a friend and her mom had her when she was eighteen and divorced her dad when she was three months old. She never saw her father again. When she got to the eight grade she was curious about what it would be like to sleep with a guy. She was 14 and he was 15 and they thought it would be fun. She said she was in love. She knew that she could get pregnant, but she didn’t care. She now has two children and still lives with her mother. She is now finishing high school. She is still with her babies father.
