VIII. How to keep teens away from alcohol

Few teenagers dispute the fact that alcohol abuse can lead to a serious addiction called alcoholism. It often goes unnoticed that most alcoholics aren’t even of legal age to drink. Teenagers need to realize drinking can only cause or add to the problems one already has. Teenagers also need to realize these problems not only affect them but everyone around them.

Our senses play a major role in our decisions. When you are drunk, you may be more willing to do things you normally wouldn’t do. Your vision is blurred and doesn’t adapt quickly to light. Your sense of touch becomes limited, and you can’t feel how hot or cold something is. You may not be able to hear or smell, as well either. As for your sense of taste, your taste buds become numb from the alcohol.

I recently interviewed a bartender at Daisy Maes Stronghold. Her name is Pamela Farkus and is 42 years of age. She believes that it is okay to drink if under the age of 21 with parental permission and supervision. She does believe that people in the military should be allowed to drink if over eighteen and under twenty-one years old. She believes that 95% of all teens drink alcohol. With that many teenagers drinking, she is sometimes afraid to drive at night.

In most car accidents that involve a drunk driver, a teenager lies behind the wheel. “Alcohol-related crashes are the number-one killer of teens”(Johnson 16). So many teenagers die each year just because they decided to drink and then drive.

Alcohol also effects your emotions. It can make a person feel happy, sad, angry, or frustrated. Some may start feeling fear or may start to worry. These emotions may make you laugh at things you normally wouldn’t laugh at, say things a person may normally not say, and do things a person in their right mind would never do.
