Teenage Pregnacy

I sat watching the Maury Polvich show one day and the topic was on teens, sex, and pregnancy. This is a really interesting topic to me because I am the mother of two teenage girls. While watching these shows, I asked myself “ What was the parents involvement in the prevention of these teen’s pregnancy?” Most of the parents on the show stated that they did talk to their children about sex, but the children just didn’t listen to them and that is how they ended up pregnant.

Listening to the parents and watching the reactions of the audience made me reflect on my situation as a teenager. All I could remember was my aunt telling me that sex was bad and that if she found out I was doing it she would kill me. That left a curious question in my mind as a teen. What is so bad about this thing called sex? I had to try it and see for myself why was it so bad. I just didn’t know all that it entailed and the repercussions that one must face when they make that decision. I ended up pregnant at the age of 14.

I decided that I would take the time to talk to a group of teenage girls ages 13-16 and asked them, “How did your parents approach you with the subject of sex?” Their responses were pretty

What stuck in my mind most differently about her talk with her father and the other girls with their mothers was she remembered her dad seemingly calm, open, and extremely confident in what he was saying to her. She also made mention that toward the end of their conversation, her dad told her that he could not tell her not to have sex, but offered her the benefits of waiting and told her what some of the consequences for not waiting could be.

After my conversation with the five young ladies, I needed to know how bad was the problem of teen pregnancy and how can we reach these young people about sex. I did a little research on teenage pregnancy in our country and what we as parent could do to prevent it.

That breaks down to four out of 10 girls will become pregnant by the age of 20. Which is stated by Alice Johnson, “Nation’s Cities Weekly.” She goes on to say “Quite simply, to many teens they still think, It can’t happen to me.” (Johnson 5)

Most of these programs are long term approached to reduce teen pregnancy.

The one girl had her sex talk given to her by her dad. It was amazing because her outlook on the sex talk was different then the other girls. She stated that her father took her to lunch and approached the topic gently as though she was a little girl. She stated that he wanted to hear what she thought and was willing to answer all her questions.
