I believe that the sacraments are sacred, blessed events, which characterize who I am in the Catholic Church. I incorporate them into my everyday lifestyle, so that I can be a better Christian, and maybe see the Lord one day.

The Holy orders is the next sacrament. This sacrament is basically for the clergy, and people who believe that they have a calling to the ministry. The sacrament, commonly called the sacrament of Orders, is celebrated by mainly bishops, priests, and deacons (Rahner, 79). It is an act where one gets ordained. Ordination usually takes place during a mass, usually a Sunday or holy day of obligation. In order to be ordained in the Catholic Church, you first have to be recommended, and then complete all of the prerequisites. It is a long process but the reward of ordination is enough to be proud of. The power that one receives at ordination is permanent. It can become suppressed if you use the authority the wrong way, and act out of character, but it cannot ever be lost.

The third sacrament in the initiation process is Confirmation. Confirmation is the final act in the initiation process, admitting baptized Christians into the congregation as adults. Confirmation is a Christians personal Pentecost (Ryan, 45). It was believed that the Holy Spirit embraces you, when you receive this sacrament, just as it did to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost. Back in the early church, confirmation was given right after an infant’s baptism. It is still like that in some churches for example, the African church, but in the Roman Catholic Church it was pushed back until seven years after baptism. In the Catholic Church, we are confirmed by an authorized bishop or priest, and the ceremony usually is preformed with anointing oil. The bishop gives a prayer of blessing upon your forehead, and seals it with a cross (the anointing oil). Confirmation is the sacrament of strength and faith. This sacrament is involved in everyday lifestyle, because before you receive this sacrament, you are working so hard to get to the point where you do receive it, and after you receive it you are an adult of the community. Being an adult means that you make your own decisions and accept responsibility for those decisions. Receiving this sacrament sends you off into the community as an adult, and it enables you to decide things for your own, and use all of the resources at hand to be one with yourself, and ultimately have a good connection with the lord, so that one day you will see him in heaven. I received my confirmation in the eighth grade, I was 15 years old, and it was a very big step for me as a member of the Roman Catholic Church. It symbolized my independence in the Christian community. I look at Confirmation as being your ticket to heaven. If you live a life in following the footsteps and examples that Jesus gave us, I will see him I heaven.

Most Catholics value the seven sacraments, because they relate them with their faith. This is also true in the eyes of the theorist and sociologist Emile Durkheim. He believed that religiousness was a feeling of social belonging. The notion that sacredness is a value that a given society places on objects, that such objects shape and generate the religious feelings of its members, and that religiousness is therefore a function of social belonging was first suggested by French sociologist Émile Durkheim.
