Catholics value the seven sacraments and involve them in their everyday lifestyles and activities. The Roman Catholic Church is one of the largest single denominations of Christianity. Most people think of the word Catholic, and associate it with white people, but little do they know that there are a lot of Black Catholics. The definition of the word catholic means universal (Cunningham, 10). When I hear that people never knew there were Black Catholics, I really look at them like they are very ignorant. Catholicism is a universal religion. Being a member of the Catholic Church means that you recognize and acknowledge the Bishop of Rome; otherwise known as the pope, in religious affairs. We all understand and comprehend the same principles. The pope has the ultimate and final authority in all matters involving the Roman Catholic Church (Encarta Encyclopedia). The Pope assigns bishops to certain dioceses and also transfers them to others. The essential component in the organization of the Church is through the diocese. The Cardinal maintains the highest authority of the church after the pope. The pope appoints them, and they constitute the council of the church, otherwise known as the Sacred College.
