The Contradicting Lives Of Two Sisters
In the short story “You’re Ugly, Too” by Lorrie Moore, the two sisters, Evan and Zoë, have a few similarities, but their wide range of differences truly set the two women apart from one another. Evan lives in New York and works as a “food designer”, and Zoë lives in the middle of nowhere as a college professor. The similarities between the two do seem to give them the strong bond of sisters. As I began reading this I would not imagine these two women to be related. I will start by discussing the girls as children, then go into their careers since they have grown up. After this, I will talk about where they live and their relationships. Also, I will relate the two women’s personalities to how they are different. Their lifestyles now are significantly different from what they were as children. On page 360 of Literature: Structure, Sound and Sense (8th edition) the narrator suggests that Evan may actually be becoming more like her sister, Zoë. The narrator states, “ When she was little, Evan had always been affectionate and devoted. Zoë had always taken care of her, advising, reassuring her, until recently, when it seemed Evan had started advising and reassuring her. It startled Zoë” (360).Zoë being
Now that Evan and Zoë are adults they do seem to lead very opposite lives with divergent careers. Evan’s so-called job is to place food on a plate so that it looks pretty. In professional terms Evan is called a “part-time food designer for photo shoots.” Zoë’s career is set in a small liberal arts college where she teaches American History. Also, Zoë is writing a book titled Hearing the One About: Uses of Humor in American Presidency. When looking at the titles of each of the two women’s careers one would likely perceive Evan’s to be very laid back. But from the context of the story, Zoë’s job seems to be much more relaxed. While describing Zoë’s job at one point a student had said, ”Professor Hendricks is often late for class and usually arrives with a cup of hot chocolate, which she offers the class sips of” (352).Many other accounts of Professor Hendricks class include, singing the King and I, and discussing movies. This leads the reader to believe that Zoë conducts a very laidback setting at her job. Also, Zoë is writing a book and works full time, which leads me on to believe that her life is very busy. But as a matter of fact she is actually living a very easygoing career because of her laidback attitude towards life. On the other hand when I look at the title of Evan’s job as a “part-time food designer for photo shoots” I imagine her job to be more laid back Zoë’s job. At the college Zoë has a full time job while Evan’s job is part time. This causes me to believe that Evan’s job is much easier that Zoë’s. But when Zoë is talking about Evan’s job, she tells the reader how busy she always is with shopping and discovering new ways to set up her food. Even Zoë believes that Evan has a hard job. I believe this because Evan went on to tell the reader how much work and time Zoë puts into her job. When it comes to their careers these two sisters are completely different. The personalities of these two women seemed to be very contradicting. Evan would like to help everyone and is always rushing around like at the party. Zoë even goes on to tell her that she is “running herself ragged.” (363). Zoë on the other hand is completely opposite of this side of her sister. When discussing Zoë’s way of life it is said that she “is often late for class (352) and “sometimes takes up class time just talking about movies” (355). This helps to prove that she is very laidback about her job. Zoë’s personality seems to be very extroverted and sarcastic with all of her actions and conversations. For example, “ she skipped into her lecture hall singing ‘Getting to Know You’--- both verses” (352). Also, the narrator discusses how Zoë put “too much effort with the eyeliner, and her earrings” (353). This was to supposedly add more drama to her appearance. Zoë was without a doubt always sarcastic. One example of Zoë’s sarcastic attitude is on page 357 when Evan asks if she is seeing anyone and Zoë replies “she is seeing her house.” Ev
