Violent Song Lyrics Encourage Violent Behaviour

There are many issues which concern doctors and parents of youth today. An example of these issues is children’s welfare. A major problem in this area is the music these youth listen to. Music has a high influence on the personality and identity of today’s youth. If it were ‘trashed’ by unethical morals, aggressive tones and violent expressions, as it is, it is bound to cause serious impact on the listener. Music is a popular form of media enjoyed by youth and is the perfect way to publicise feelings and opinions. Lyrics of songwriters and artists today have a much greater influence on our youth than anticipated. With so much negative influence appearing in our music today, the future for our children could be insecure.

Rock and rap music of today send out negative messages to the younger generation that need not be promoted, nor encouraged. Suicide, murder, drugs, violence, sex, shooting and swearing are just a few of the issues raised in rock and rap songs. Some of the obvious culprits of the issue are the rock and rap artists themselves. Artists who are highly favored by the younger generation tend to have great influence over adolescents. Artists such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg and System of a Down promote and, to an exte

nt, encourage these crimes. The victims then are the young and often vulnerable listeners who highly respect these musical ‘idols’. Although some may argue that the younger generation need to be informed of these significant issues, they could be better explained by parents, guardians and those in the teaching profession through educational programs. By this, parents can sit with their children and listen to the music together. They can then discuss all issues brought up in the lyrics and children can question their parents about the matters. Through music, such issues could be unclear to the listener and the message intended to be perceived through the music by the artist could be misinterpreted. Music itself doesn’t explain real life issues like this effectively.

As clearly seen it would be futile to censor a song such as this, since the problem evidently is the message it holds.

The offensive language, morals and images portrayed in music today has a negative influence on the behaviour of the younger generation. Offensive music serves no real benefit to our society, but instead, exposes the vulnerable youth to violent actions such as suicide, murder, shooting and swearing. There is overwhelming evidence to conclude that it encourages violence in the behaviour of the youth who listen to this type of music.
