The Benifits Of Using Free-weights With Prosthesis

There are hundreds of accidents that occur everyday throughout the world; many of which result in amputation due to unsaveable body parts. After an amputation there is a long road ahead for the individual not only to maintain normal living, but also to function properly in everyday tasks. Many amputees feel that after an amputation there is no way that they could possibly live a normal life again; however, with the aid of weight therapy it is possible to maintain the function of a limb. Unfortunately, weight therapy for amputees is an area that has not been explored. The focal point of my evaluation is the advantages of weight therapy for people with prosthesis.

The Columbia Encyclopedia Sixth Edition defines a prosthetic, or an artificial limb, as a mechanical replacement for a missing limb. A prosthesis must be light and flexible to permit easy movement, but also sufficiently sturdy to support the weight of the body or to manipulate objects. Materials used in artificial limbs include willow wood, laminated fibers and plastics, various metallic alloys, and carbon-fiber composites. Artificial legs may be secured by a cuff that fits around the thigh like a corset, holding the artificial leg firm

Physical therapy plays a major role in the rehabilitation process. According to the University of Illinois McKinley Health Center, stretching exercises are the most essential part of all exercises. Stretching helps to improve and maintain flexibility because it expands the range of motion of joints and muscles.

ly in place. These cuffs connect to a leather belt around the waist or by suction between suction and stump (see exhibits 1.00 and 2.00). Artificial arms may be made of lighter metals and plastics because they do not have to support the weight of the body (see exhibit 3.00). However, due to the complexity of one individual’s hand to another, artificial hands vary in size, structure and utility (see exhibit 4.00). Research and development has resulted in devices that are both functional and cosmetic. It is important that prosthesis look natural so that an amputee will not feel as though he or she stands out because of their prosthetic arm, leg, etc. The natural look makes the amputee feel at ease knowing that they are not treated like they are “handicapped.”
