. Hera
Hera was the Queen of the gods and the daughter of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea. She was the sister and wife of the god Zeus. Hera was the goddess of marriage and the protector of married women. This is very ironic since her marriage wasn’t very stable. Her husband Zeus was always described as falling in love with one woman after another and resorting to all kinds of tricks to hide his infidelity from his wife. Stories of his escapades were numerous in ancient mythology, and many of his offspring were a result of his love affairs with both goddesses and mortal women. Hera is known for her jealousy, and because of it, she persecuted her husband's lovers and the children he had by them. Her jealousy is shown through her spiteful actions toward Io, Semele and her son, Dionysus, and Heracles. Io was a beautiful woman who caught the eye of the passionate (and conspicuously promiscuous) Olympian god Zeus. Io was commonly thought to be a daughter of the river god Inachus and Melia. In addition, she belonged to a royal family and was also a priestess of Hera at Argos. Zeus was smitten with Io, so the ruler of the gods devised a way to carry out his relationship with the virgin princess. He caused a cloud to form on a sunny day, and u
sed this cloud to conceal his lovemaking. However, Zeus's vigilant wife Hera noticed the strange dark cloud marring the landscape from her home on Olympus, and immediately her suspicions were aroused. She darted down to earth to investigate. Zeus, in the meantime, had transformed his newest mistress into a stunning white heifer in order to protect her from Hera's notorious wrath. Upon arriving at the scene, Hera asked about the lovely heifer. Zeus was forced to give Io to his wife. But Hera was still not satisfied that Zeus would behave himself. The goddess therefore told Argus, a monster with many eyes, to guard the heifer. Zeus did not like this arrangement at all, so he sent his cunning son Hermes to dispatch Argus. After Hermes conquered the guardian monster, Hera became even angrier, and summoned a Fury in the form of a gadfly to sting and pursue the heifer Io relentlessly. Io wandered far from her home, trying to escape from the gadfly. Finally, she reached Egypt, and in this country she was at last restored to her original form. As a beautiful young woman once again, Io gave birth to a son named Epaphus, her child by Zeus. This story establishes Zeus and Hera’s mutual power over each other. Zeus, god of the gods, is the most powerful member of the Pantheon. As such, he takes advantage of his power, which includes indulging in the pleasures of other women. But, when his wife arrives on the scene, he defers to her anger. Her wrath puts him in a position to bow to her own power of him. Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele. He was the only god to have a mortal parent. Zeus came to Semele
