The Difficulties Turkish Cypriots Will Face By The Greek Cypriot Entrance To EU
THE DIFFICULTIES FACING THE GREEK CYPRIOT APPLICATION FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP OF THE EU For many years by today, the Cyprus problem had been extended, and the situation was known by the whole world. Today, there are two communities in the island which have its’ own state. But, only the Greek administration is recognized as the legal ruler of the whole island. No other countries, except Turkey, are not recognizing the TRNC as the legal administration of the Turkish Cypriots. In 1960, a bi-communal republic was established under the guarantee of Turkey, Greece and UK. But, in 1963, this republic collapsed, because Greek Cypriots began and onslaught against the Turkish Cypriots. In 1973, the republic was divided into two, and in 1983 TRNC was founded. The Greek Cypriots continued to claim that they are the only legal administration in the Cyprus. But, the “Republic of Cyprus” as Greeks claim, has an administrative power only on the southern part of the island. It has no administrative power on the northern part, because, Turkish Cypriots have their own governments there and they rule themselves. European Union knows this fact, but it accepted the application of the South Cyprus Greek Administration.
At the end of 1958, negotiations started with the aim to bring peace to the island. In 1959, Turkey, Greece and Britain made the Zurich Agreement. Based on this agreement, Republic of Cyprus was established, and Britain was given sovereign military bases on the island. As we all know, the Greek Cypriot entry to European Union is illegal by always. Some of them are not very significant, but there is something that gives us the evidence of the illegality of the Greek Cypriot entry to the EU. This Evidence is that, in the Treaty of Guaranty in 1960, Article 1 stated that, “the Republic should not participate in whole or in part, in any political or economic union with any state whatever”. Professor Maurice H. Mendelson explains this article as follows: “ the Republic will never join any political or economical or international organization which both Greece and Turkey were not members” . For example, if both Greece and Turkey were members of NATO, than Cyprus can join it, but if neither or only one of them is a member than the island cannot join that organization. But, this is only one of the legal problems that the island will face. On 17 February 1959, London Conference began. Britain, Turkey and Greece met with the representatives of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. In the London Conference three agreements were signed: Turkish Cypriots want to join EU as an equal partners in a confederation. If European Union will accept the application of the South Cyprus Greek Administration, I believe that there will be three things that will happen. The first one is that, the economy of Turkish Republic of Cyprus will be very bad, because the people living in north Cyprus are hoping to join EU in order to improve the economy in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The second and in my opinion the most important one is that, the partition of the island will be inevitable. Because Turkey will never accept this, and annex north Cyprus to protect the rights of citizens of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. And, the third one is that, the EU membership of Turkey will be in danger, because, there will be two vetoes for membership of Turkey, one of Greece and one of the SCGA. So, briefly there will be two kinds of difficulties that will Turkish Cypriots faced. One is economical and the other is political. Moreover, there is another aspect of the entrance in to European Union, an aspect that I hope that will affect the entrance of South Cyprus Greek Administration into EU. This aspect is that of terrorism. After 11th September events, it become well known to the world that, the SCGA is the number one country in helping terrorists, terrorists form all kinds of organizations from AL-QAEDA to ASALA, and to PKK. European Union should never accept the entrance of such country, but it did. The most crucial question is that what will happen next.
