Nazi Racial Policy and Anti-semitismThe Nazis believed in the concept of race. All Germanic peoples were part of the Aryan race, tied together by their common language, culture, traditions and blood. The Nazis attempted to weld this group together into one community or Volk. The main ideal of the party was a classless society where everone was Aryan. In this way Hitler combined nationalism of a rascist kind and socialism. Racialism was neither new nor exclusively German. Anti-semitism was traditionally Christian. Pan-German groups had expounded similar ideas in the nineteenth century. According to these views, humanity was divided into races. Aryans, inferior races eg slavs and negoes and sub humans (Jews). When Hittler came to power on the 30th January 1933, they immediately took action against the Jews. Action included: April 1, 1933: A boycott of Jewish shops and businesses by the Nazis.
April 25, 1933: The law against the overcrowding of German Schools restricted Jewish high school enrollment. After Kristallnacht, thousands of Jews fled Germany. By October 1941 165,000 older Jews remained. The Nazis began segregating them into Jewish only neighbourhoods. From mid 1940 they had to register for forced labour. From September 1941 they has to wear the Yellow Star of David to identify themselves. Between October 1941 and July 1942 the Jews were rounded up and sent east to be "resettled". To some people like Victor Klemperer it was known that the camps were slaughterhouses as early as 17 October 1942. Novemeber 9-10 1938: Kristallnacht "Night of the Broken Glass". Jewish property including hospitals and orphanages was destroed and vandalised. 91 were killed and 36 seriously injured.
