The Effect Of Life Experience’s On The Works Of Edgar Allan Poe

Experiences during a lifetime can affect a person in numerous ways, such as did Edgar Allan Poe. Poe took his experiences, and transformed them into the stories and poems that we have today. Throughout this paper, you will see how events in Poe’s life not only influenced the style of Poe’s writing, but also the subject matter and the characters.

Saying that Poe had a bad childhood would be a tremendous understatement. Around the time that Poe was born, his father left them. Two years later, his mother died. Poe then went to live with a family member, but because of the financial situation they would not have been able to take care of him and his brother. He was then adopted by the family of Fanny and John Allan.

Living in the Allan household gave Poe opportunities that he could never have obtained if he had lived with his parents. Poe was sent to teachers at age five, and even had private schooling in England for the short stint

Later in the poem Poe tells of how thunderclouds come into the area (Helen 48-50.), this is when she does not return his letters. Lastly, he says that although she is gone he can see still see her eyes and they are “unextinguished by the sun!” (Helen 52-67.).

Poe’s feelings toward John Allan also come out in his poems. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Montressor plots and carries out the murder of his friend, Fortunato. This is done by telling Fortunato that there is a cask of fine wine, Amontillado, in his wine cellar. Being a wine connoisseur, Fortunato wants to taste this wine so he follows Montressor down into the vaults. When they finally reach to where the cask is supposed to be, Fortunato rushes into the area only to find a wall. By the time he figures out what has happened, Montressor has already chained him to the wall and started to brick it up.

He now moved to Baltimore to stay with his aunt and future wife. While living with them he entered MS Found in a Bottle and won a prize of $50. Poe then married his cousin, who, at the time, was only 13. After their marriage he called his old boss up at The Southern Literary Messenger to get his job back, Poe had been fired for drinking. His boss agreed, but if Poe turned to the bottle again he would be fired (The Messenger.).

The death of Poe was tragic, he was found outside a bar in Baltimore lying in the street. Some say that he died of alcohol withdrawal, but his family swears that he was sober for over a year and a half. Others say that it was because of rabbis.

While Poe’s first love and his relationship with John Allan were major events in Poe’s life, the loss of his wife took a tremendous toll on him. Many of his works have elements of her death in them, but one of the most famous would be the poem “Raven.”
