The Egyptian Sphinx
There is Seven Wonders of the World; I think that the sphinx is by far the most enchanting. The dictionary defines the word Sphinx as 1.Mythology. A figure in Egyptian myth having a body of a lion and the head of a man, ram, or hawk. 2. Often Sphinx Greek Mythology. A winged creature, having the head of a woman, and the body of a lion, noted for killing those who could not answer its riddle. 3. A puzzling or mysterious person. (Middle English Sphinx, from Latin sphinx, from Greek.} http://dictionanry.reference.com/search?q=Sphinx I have never been to Egypt, but I have always been fascinated with the sphinx and the pyramids. “The sphinx stands 65 feet tall and 240 feet long. It is carved from natural limestone. The head and body are carved from large blocks of limestone. The front paws were created separately from large blocks of limestone. At one time the head of the sphinx had the Uraeus (Cobra head piece), it also had a pharaohs beard (which now is in fragments, and displayed in museums) the sphinx was also painted at one time. When I think of all the work that was put into making the sphinx I just am left in awe. Today the world seems to have lost its appreciation of the finer things in life; people are more concerne
“In 1853 A. Mariette uncovered it. It was uncovered again in 1905. 1926 was the last time the sphinx was covered by sand. This time it was Emile Baraize a French engineer who uncovered the sphinx. Braraize also found passage ways into the sphinx. From 1950 to present day the sphinx continues to be repaired, currently under the supervision of Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Undersecretary of the state for the Giza Monuments.” http://www.users.qwest.net/~azschoolgirl/ Throughout the years there have been outstanding and unbelievable artists, the king that is believed to have built the sphinx is in the same class as Leonardo Divinci . I can’t imagine the vision he saw in his head that sparked the creation of the sphinx, this person is believed to have been, “Chephren, the king who built the second pyramid in Giza. This unique structure of combining head of a man and the body of a lion, is because their king has always been represented as a lion. This represents the smartness of a human and the strength of an animal.” http://www.horus.ics.org.eg/html/sphinx.html “The sphinx dates back to circa 2540 BCE, which coincides with Khafre’s pyramid, Making it about 4,500 years old. There are others that believe that it is even older dating it to 10,500 BC. One theory for this date are the erosion patterns on the sphinx, they are different then other monuments in Giza, according to John Anthony West. Another theory according to Robert Bauval, is that it may have something to do with Orion’s belt in 10,500 BC. Even though the Sphinx is one of the worlds most beautiful and majestic statues of the entire world, it was built for a use, not just for art. The sphinx and the pyramids seem to have many ties together; the same king who built the second pyramid is also the man that constructed the sphinx. Oddly enough the pyramid is for the deceased pharaohs containing all their treasures and tombs, while the
