Capture the build of tension and Justice in MacBeth
In the play “MacBeth” there is a build up of tension in the characters and the plot itself that leads to justice. We see the build up of tension right from the beginning of the play and this tension builds throughout the play and finally ends in justice being served to those who did wrong.The play immediately begins with disorder when the witches enter saying, “Fair is foul and foul is fair” with menacing thunder booming. This gives the feeling of disorder and begins the build up of tension. The play then moves to a military camp where The Scottish King, Duncan hears of the news that his generals, MacBeth and Banquo have defeated two invading armies. This then leads to MacBeth and Banquo encountering the three witches. The witches then tell MacBeth and Banquo of their prophecy that MacBeth will be made Thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland. They also tell Banquo that he will be the father a line of Scottish Kings. This prophecy from the witches builds up tension because MacBeth and Banquo treat these prophecies sceptically, until some of King Duncan’s men come and inform MacBeth that he has been made Thane of Cawdor. Lady MacBeth, who seemed strong and ruthless, becomes plagued with fits of sleepwalking in which she believes to have bloodstains on her hands. The doctor explains how Lady MacBeth’s mind is the problem and not her body, so she cannot be cured. She was beginning to fall victim to her own guilt and madness, to an even greater degree then her husband. MacDuff vows revenge when the news of his family’s execution reaches him and he joins Duncan’s Son to challenge MacBeth’s forces. MacBeth then learns that Lady MacBeth has killed herself, causing him to sink into a deep despair. He still goes to battle and the English forces gradually overwhelm his army and castle. MacBeth encounters MacDuff, who declares that he was not ‘of woman born’ but was ‘untimely ripped’ from his mother’s womb. MacDuff kills and beheads MacBeth. This final battle in the play proves that justice has been served because MacBeth and his wife are dead. In the end, it was their guilty conscience that killed them because it gradually ate away at their minds until it drove them insane.
