A Powerful Element Of Christianity Present Throughout Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a lengthy poem that is broken into seven parts and was written originally in 1798 (revised in 1817) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Throughout the poem several elements of Christianity appear continuously. One of the most powerful and very present elements is that of the Holy Spirit, which is found in: the Albatross; in the many strange occurrences that occur to the Mariner; and acknowledged by the Mariner. There are many signs that the (Holy)Spirit is with the ship during its fateful voyage. The first obvious sign is the Albatross. It could be thought that the Spirit sent and is present in the Albatross that appears towards the end of the first part, “At length did cross an Albatross: As if it had been a Christian soul, We hailed it in God’s name.” (Coleridge, 63-66) This idea is supported by the fact that the Catholic symbol for the Holy Spirit is the shape of a bird, making this not a far stretch. The sailors, including the Mariner, also hail it in God’s name proving that once more it is a religious symbol and presence to everyone on the ship. With no real reason given the Mariner kills the Albatross at line 82 only to soon acknowledg
The most power example of the Spirit is when it is mentioned and given credit for things that occur. The first example of this is when the Mariner acknowledges the Spirit is what made the ship sail, At the end of part five and beginning of part six the Mariner hears saintly voices. These voices also recognize the Spirit, “The spirit who bideth by himself…He loved the bird that loved the man…”(Coleridge, 406-408.) This only further proves the presence of the Spirit with both the acknowledgement of the Mariner and the saintly voices heard by the Mariner. That made the ship to go.” (Coleridge, 382-384) “Beneath the lightning and the Moon, Samuel Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” has a very powerful Christian element, the Holy Spirit, throughout its seven parts. The Mariner is aided and learns many lessons due to the presence of the Spirit. Due to the Spirit saving the Mariner, he is able to spread the moral lesson he himself has learned to many abroad.
